Today the MBTA unveiled two fare and services change proposals to address serious funding deficiencies. Under the two proposals, fare increases would range from 35% to 43%. In addition, MBTA ferries would be cut, commuter rail service would end at 10PM on weekdays and weekend service would be eliminated, and the E line and Mattapan line service would be suspended on the weekends. Bus service would also be reduced under both plans, however, would be less affected with a greater fare increase. Please visit the MBTA’s website (mbta.com) for more detailed information.
Over the next three months there will be 20 public meetings held across the state and customers are also invited to submit written comments. I urge all of my constituents and other North Shore residents to contact the MBTA to detail how these changes will affect your daily lives. A public meeting will be held in Salem on Wednesday, January 25th from 6-8PM in the 3rd Floor Conference Room of the City Hall Annex – I will be in attendance and hope you will join me there. A second North Shore hearing will be held at Lynn City Hall, 6-8, on February 7th. Instructions for submitting written comments may also be found on the MBTA’s website.
